110
A psalm of David.
1 The Lord said to my Lord,[a] “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for you.[b]”
2 The Lord will expand your royal power from Zion; you will rule over your enemies.
3 Your people willingly follow you on the day when your power is revealed on the holy mountains, renewed in strength every morning like dew at dawn.[c]
4 The Lord has made a vow he will not break: “You are a priest forever, following the order of Melchizedek.”
5 The Lord stands right beside you to support you; he will strike down kings in his anger.
6 He will execute judgment on the nations, filling their lands with corpses. He will strike down those who rule all over the earth.
- a “My Lord”: by the time of the New Testament this was applied to the Messiah, but it is not made explicit in the text here. (See for example Matthew 22:41-46; Mark 12:35-37; Luke 20:41-44).
- b “Footstool”: A symbol of submission.
- c This verse has many problems in translation, particularly at the end. Literally: “from the womb from the dawn to you the dew of our youth.”
- d Referring to the king that is made explicit in verse 2, not the Lord God.
- e In other words the king will be refreshed.
- f “Therefore”: probably meaning for all the reasons cited in the psalm.
